Today I caught A Streetcar Named Desire at the cinema. As part of the NT Live initiative, live theatre is broadcast in cinemas across the country. Tonight was an encore showing of the live performance which was shown on 16 September.
Gillian Anderson starred as Blanche Dubois, with Ben Foster as Stanley Kowalski. It was an amazing show- Anderson was outstanding in the role. The staging was innovative- set in the round, the open set revolved slowly so that the audience continually saw things from different angles. I loved the use of music especially during the scene changes.
My friends and I were struck with how modern the play was- written in 1947 by Tennessee Williams, it deals with domestic violence and rape, female sexuality and desire, class, money, alcohol abuse and psychological damage. All the good stuff! Over 3 hours long, but it went by in a flash. Go and see it if you get the chance.
